Where Does Maha Go from Here?

Oh my, how far the Maha Music Festival has come.

Few remember its inauspicious beginnings in 2009 at Lewis & Clark Landing, because few were there. The day featured has-been emo act Dashboard Confessional and where-are-they-now casino fodder Big Head Todd. From an indie music perspective, the festival's biggest moments came early in the afternoon when Appleseed Cast and Little Brazil played to fewer than 300...

Sidventures in Austin and beyond

The tale of "Sidventures," a photo book that doubles as a children’s story, starts here in Omaha, on a frigid December day in Dundee. Alex Hopes was just hanging out at home when he got a phone call that would eventually alter his life.

He told The Reader about it in an email interview from his home in Austin, Texas, where he now makes a living as a photographer.

Hopes said when he answered the phone, a friend on...

SummerBest: The Mid-Year Indie Rock Report

I used to write these CD review wrap-ups on a quarterly basis, but now that The Reader has gone monthly I've pulled back to doing them just twice a year. As a result, there's a ton more recordings to consider.

In fact, so far 2015 has been a benchmark year for new music, at least from an indie perspective. There have been more quality indie records released at this point in the year than any other year I can...

Nebraska Brewers Rally for Beer

The last time the American Homebrewers Association had a rally here in Nebraska was back in 2007. According to AHA director Gary Glass, it was clearly overdue.

In a phone interview, Glass told us they usually try to contact local breweries in places where they haven’t been in a while, and sometimes the breweries get a hold of them.

Glass said the rallies are an opportunity for brewers to get together and learn...
