Bohemian Rhapsody

“Good morning. Would you like some coffee?”

When you walked through the wooden double doors of the Antiquarium bookstore, you could hear these words-- at any time of the day or night. They would have been spoken by the Antiquarium’s owner and founder, Tom Rudloff. Rudloff died on May 29th.

The Antiquarium is one of Nebraska’s best-loved bookstores. On the shelves that fill its cavernous spaces, you could find...

Ah, Maha!

Ah, Maha!

That's my "slogan suggestion" for the 8th annual Maha Music Festival, being held at Aksarben Village Aug. 20, which features headliner Passion Pit, along with electronic popster Grimes, hip-hop phenom Vince Staples, returning Nebraskan Matthew Sweet and my favorite act of the line-up, Car Seat Headrest, a band that's about to explode beyond the tiny, crippled indie music world (You heard it first hear on...

Comic Con Report — Day Three & Four

The heart of Comic-Con is the exhibition floor — a Superdome-sized space jammed corner-to-corner with artists, retailers and showrooms for studios and toy/collectible manufacturers.   Imagine if SXSW lined every musician in one room, and asked them to play simultaneously.  That’s Comic-Con.

When the floor reaches critical mass, the crowd is pressed together shoulder-to-shoulder, shuffling through like penguins on a...

The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema La Vista location is participating in the month-long celebration of the peculiar filmmaker who produced such works as Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow, Beetlejuice, Batman (1989), and Alice in Wonderland (2010). You guessed it, Johnny Depp loving, the out of the ordinary, freakily entertaining, the one and only, Tim Burton. With a new movie being released this month, Miss Peregrine’s...

More Prairie, Less Pizzazz

He may not have superpowers, but Dapose shares at least one characteristic with any number of comic book heroes — that of maintaining dual identities.

By day he is simply Michael Dappen, the mild-mannered guy slinging mulch at Indian Creek Nursery or maybe toiling away in some pastoral site as a landscaper under the guise of The Natural Gardener.

The Natural Gardener? Okay, let’s make that three identities.

Comic Con Report — Day Two

Friday was light on Comic-con’ing, the day spent with friends from Southern California, though we had a few geek moments.

Walking back to our hotel, we passed the theater where Conan O’Brien is taping his show — we watched that night’s Game of Thrones guest list make a dash from stage door to black SUVs, were they were whisked back to Westeros.

It was the GOT b-team, but still fun to see Varys with a full...

Comic Con Report — Day One

Greetings from the center of the geek universe, San Diego Comic-Con, a black hole of color and light threatening to collapse in on itself.

Arriving late on Wednesday, we skipped opening night where the exhibition hall throws open their gates and the feeding frenzy begins, conventioneers swarming to buy exclusive Comic-Con swag.  Instead, I focused on the evening’s festivities — Tacocat at the Soda Bar.

I thought...
