Hockey is Here

Fifteen years ago former University of Nebraska at Omaha athletic director Don Leahy and few influential Omahans came up with a crazy plan: Let’s play college hockey in Omaha. It seemed preposterous. Where was the infrastructure of youth teams? Where would the team play? Who would want to coach a fledgling program? Who would want to watch?

Fifteen years later, as UNO starts its second season in the most prestigious hockey conference in the country, the issue is not how will the Mavs compete, but how they will deal with expectations. UNO is ranked No. 14 to start the season in the first USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Men’s College Hockey Poll.

Cosmic Forecast, Sept. 29-Oct. 5

“If we are the diggers/miners of gold of/for the gods, then their speech must be of such epic proportions that their words would seem as a humming silence to/for us.” These words are the start (Inshallah) of my newest/next work. That’s what we need — a new start. In 2 short weeks it’s the Full Moon in Aries (October 12th); the start of the night of the year. All things of culture are born at night. Let’s start something cultural, and refine it during these next 2 seasons. If I may continue… “Fortunately for me, my god is silence — and my prayers are always answered. That’s why we go to sleep.” It’s time (Saturn), this week, to create…

Jays prepare to tackle Terps

Another game, another shutout victory for Creighton men’s soccer. The No. 3 Jays beat St. Mary’s 1-0 on Sept. 24, running their shutout streak to seven games. Things are about to get more difficult. Creighton will face top-ranked Maryland on the road Friday, then head to No. 7 Indiana the following weekend. Sandwiched in between is a mid-week trip to Madison, Wisconsin. to face the Badgers ... Speaking of the Badgers is there any truth to the Internet mock-ups of Nebraska in black helmets/pants? My guess is no, but I’m not opposed. Black would bring the attitude the Blackshirts seem to be missing early this season. Not so sure it could help them get lined up…

Good Vibrations — the Cure for Hysteria

Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal is bringing the story of a miracle cure to the big screen in a new movie titled Hysteria. The film documents a little-known area of Western medicine that the medical establishment would probably like to forget.

By the early 1900s, Western medicine had succeeded in eliminating a scourge, once common in the 1800s, that struck women of child-bearing years, whether married or single, young or old. The disease was known as “hysteria.” This disease caused numerous visits to the doctor for temporary cures. In fact, by 1890 or so, hysteria patients comprised a significant proportion of many a physician’s practice.

Most of us understand the word “hysterical” in its more modern sense. We take it…

Cosmic Forecast, Sept. 22-Sept. 28

Happy fall, you all! Have a beeeautiful change of seasons! Let’s all be good little Indians and pray for the Great Spirit of the plains, Wakan Tanka, to grant us one last fling before we have to hunker down ’til spring. The spiders have already gone to sleep. The bugs will soon follow, and then the holiest of moments balances over these plains, for just a taste of time. Drink deep. In this moment, I love you all…

Husker ‘Closer’

Late in the fourth quarter of Nebraska’s 51-38 victory over Washington, as the Huskers tried to run out the clock by running the ball, Rex Burkhead signaled for a replacement.

Freshman Braylon Heard told running backs coach Ron Brown that, anyway.

“He said, ‘Coach, Rex is tapping out,’ ” Brown said.

Brown asked Burkhead if he had been tapping out. Burkhead said no, he was just trying to get a signal from the sideline. “So I looked over at Braylon,” said Brown. “He was laughing at me. He wanted to get in. He’s eager to play. But Rex, he’s not going to tap.”

Not that Burkhead should never tap out. “I’ve told him this: ‘If…

Songs in the Key of Healing

First, a Stevie Wonder story. In the mid-1970s, Stevie was pretty much a fixture at the historic Record Plant recording studios at 8456 West Third Street in Hollywood. That's where he recorded the albums Innervision, Talking Book and Fulfillingness’ First Finale. Wonder swept Grammies for years but one of his most remarkable performances was on the air hockey table in the Record Plant’s Studio C hallway at his 1975 birthday party.

Stevie would challenge newly arrived partiers to a game of air hockey. Since they had just got there, they had not yet witnessed his skill … or his unique strategy. To “level the playing field,” Stevie asked his opponent to don a blindfold. Of course, it was…
