A Tale of Two Ballparks

Change is sometimes hard to swallow. One of the new Reuben sandwiches you can eat while watching the newly-rebranded Omaha Storm Chasers at the newly-built Werner Park is not. And that’s the price of progress. The old and familiar is crowded out by the new and improved. It’s always difficult to gauge how this will be received. Can the lingering flavor of Rosenblatt Stadium be slathered over by the latest designer mustards or washed away with a wider array of beers? Is convenience more powerful than nostalgia? Omaha will begin to find out over the next seven days with the opening of Werner Park on Apr. 16, followed by the debut of TD Ameritrade Park four days later. If New…

DJ Scotty Boy
3 UP 3 Down with DJ Scotty Boy

April 14 DJ Scotty Boy with Bam Bam Buddha, Rhythm & Flux, and DJ Shif-D Whiskey Tango, 311 S. 15th St. $10, $5 for ONL Card holders, 9 p.m., 402.934.4874, whiskeytangoomaha.com Did you know there's a DJ Times Magazine? And did you know DJ Scotty Boy has been in their Top 10 for three years running? I didn't either, but there are a lot of things you learn on an artist's Facebook page. As a nationally touring DJ, he's staked a reputation on his own brand of mash up, something he's lent his home city's name to — that being the Sin City itself, Las Vegas. And while Omaha's club culture might be just in its starting stages, Scotty Boy's…

Weekly Horoscopes by MojoPo

Welcome, spring! Barefoot people love spring. Blessed be. The Full Moon in Libra is on Palm Sunday, the 17th, so it's still 50/50. Which "50" are you in? The same planet that rules generosity rules luck. Even as we speak, Jupiter is conjunct the Sun in mid-Aries. Forget Mercury retrograde in Aries for a dangerous second. To balance (Saturn in opposition in Libra), go deep, spiritually. Bet it all on red 13 and give it a spin! Sometimes one must venture outside of one's self to find one's Self. Humbly seek a/the life with more meaning. Blessings all around. — MojopoPlanetPower.com *ARIES (3.21-4.20) Moonday, April 11th, 2011 at 11 in the p.m., Mercury retrograde conjuncts Jupiter at…

Creighton and the Curse of the Missing Midcourt Line

After some quick calculation I would estimate that I’ve watched, officiated or played in approximately 10,000 basketball games in my lifetime. I can’t remember ever seeing one that was decided on a backcourt violation. But then again 9,999 of those games weren’t played on a court made to resemble the leaf-strewn floor of an Oregon forest. Most courts have a clear dividing line at half court. The slave-to-fashion University of Oregon has more of a suggestion of one, and it ultimately decided the CBI championship game for Creighton. With under 20 seconds to go in a tie game the Jays’ Antoine Young was burning clock near half court to set up what was likely Creighton’s final…

Rx for Sleep: Do nothing and rest afterwards

Liz Taylor couldn’t sleep. She had become dependent on substances that eroded the natural sleep process. Soothing slumber eluded her. Detox was the next step and her personal assistant, Roger Wall, was on the phone asking me for help. A couple years earlier, Wall was Barry Manilow’s PA during the recording of Paradise Café. I was engineer and the role of controlling the recording process, acting as the conduit responsible for assuring the technical and often the musical integrity of an artist’s work, which can be daunting if not downright stressful. Typically, some engineers resort to nicotine or alcohol or pot in response to the stress of a 30-piece orchestra and world-class musicians relying on your competence in committing their…

After tourney loss, the state of UNO hockey

A few inches of padding, one blurry puck and 10 agonizing minutes kept UNO from advancing to the second round of the NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament last week. Was it or wasn’t it a goal? Doesn’t matter. The officials in last Friday’s UNO-Michigan game eventually, after 10 minutes of review that seemed to define the word inconclusive, ruled that it was and that was it. As is often the case in sports, the end betrayed the journey. UNO had a disproportionately rough end to the season. First there was the first round exit in the WCHA finals. Then there was the controversial end to the Michigan game. In between there was the controversy over the end of the football…

Weekly Horoscopes

Happy New Moon stellium in Aries Sunday, April 3 at 9:32 a.m. The Sun, Moon, Mars, Jupiter, the planet Uranus and Mercury retrograde are all forming a "stellium" in Aries. Thus my/the mythic macho pose. Thanks Chelsea (not soon to be for) Long. It would seem a good time to start or initiate — but not really? Mercury retrograde! Yeah, I know it's confusing. Now you know how I feel all the time. Start projects now in your mind; manifesting after three weeks (April 20) which you/we shall/will find to be a better time — according to Michael P. and the wisdom of Astrology. MojoPlanetPower.com * ARIES (3.21-4.20) Well, we're off and running! Here comes/starts Spring! Your ruler…
