In Sync: Body and Nature

Nature and doshas

The ancient Indian medical system known as ayurveda identifies three primary energies in nature, pitta, vata, and kapha. All existence is made of these three energies — bodies, planets, trees, foods — everything. Related to the body, these energies are called doshas. Balance of the doshas is crucial to health.

We can stay in sync with nature by studying the nature of the doshas.

Pitta relates to the element fire, anything that has a fiery, hot and high-energy nature. Summer is a pitta season, peppers are a pitta spice and we all know fiery people.

Vata is airy, dry, cool, changeable, mercurial, identified with the element wind. Vata people tend to be…

Husker ‘Want-to’

Bo Pelini might have misinterpreted the basis for the question. But no one could have misinterpreted his response. Nebraska’s fifth-year football coach punctuated it with an icy stare in the direction of the reporter who asked. Pelini held the stare for several seconds.

The question was whether the Huskers’ tackling problems in a 36-30 loss to UCLA at the Rose Bowl stadium were a result of lacking “want-to,” a description used by some of his players.

Pelini equated “want-to” with commitment.

“ ’Want-to,’ from our players? Let me tell you something about our football team, our football players and everybody associated with our football program,” he said. “There isn’t any more ‘want-to’ out there. Don’t start…

Preventing Breast Cancer

The single, most effective preventive measure I ever took to decrease my risk of breast cancer was early in life. When I picked the skinny swimmer with the “x,y” as the one to slam into my mummy’s ovum, I came out the other end of the gender lottery as “male.” That reduced my risk of getting breast cancer to nearly nil. Of course, statistically, I have a much higher prospect of prostate cancer and a shorter life span than those who went with the “x,x” package.

I do not seek to make light of breast cancer, an epidemic disease among American women. Rather, it’s important to remember that preventing disease is natural and one way of looking at…

f VIRGO (8.23-9.22)  Ahaaa… At last, blessed insight is available; but must not the hand of the mind be open and hopin’ to receive/perceive? Is your mind (Mercury) open? Is your heart (Venus) pure? A double “yes” paves your path for sure into a greener pasture, hey Louis? Mercury, your ruler and the messenger of the gods, is transiting…

Ameer, That’s Who

The scene is often repeated early in each new Nebraska football season.

A reporter will approach an interview already underway, look at the Husker answering questions, and ask someone on the periphery: “Who’s that?”

The situation is understandable. Coach Bo Pelini’s policy is that those who haven’t played are off-limits, so newcomers and redshirts haven’t been interviewed at Nebraska, meaning a fair number of players aren’t yet familiar to reporters.

Everyone knows the veterans, of course, Rex Burkhead, Taylor Martinez, Baker Steinkuhler, Daimion Stafford, Brett Maher. Just not the new guys or the lower-unit back-ups.

Ameer Adbullah would be in the former category. He’s a sophomore and a running back besides. Even the faces of…

News You Can Use

From too much healthcare to careless docs, some of these recent news stories are worth review.

First do no harm. Ah, yes. If only American medicine would live by that credo then maybe so many wouldn’t die by its hand. Probably the best description of medical care you shouldn’t get is any kind that is a) unnecessary in the first place; b) does harm even when it’s a success or c) the bad outweighs the good. But when do you know if a medical treatment like surgery, for example, is needed? Isn’t it really a cut and dried reality? Well, it turns out that it isn’t. Whether something as dangerous and invasive as surgery is needed or not…
