Ready to Roll

The Omaha Rollergirls suit up for a bout in much the same gear as any athlete: kneepads, helmets, mouth guards … fishnets. OK, so that last bit of garb isn't standard in the sports world, but it’s a fitting component of ORGs’ stunning cocktail of sport and style, skill and spectacle. Visiting their bunker at the old Cheap Skate near 90th and Maple for a practice/scrimmage it’s clear that while the skaters’ tattooed-rocker-meets-retro look is hot, their derby names hilarious and their pin-curls on point, the aesthetic is only as bangin’ as the fierce athleticism. Angela Parker, an Air Force unit program coordinator who skates as Alice D. Tripp, is a new skater in 2011, but she’s refereed in previous…

Cosmic Forecast for Feb. 10-16

Meow! Greetings our first week into the Year of the Cat! Some speak Year of the Hare; but I just don’t care. They need to rid themselves of the habit of calling the Year of the Cat the Year of the Rabbit. The Cat’s where it’s at. Audibly celebrate with Al Stewart’s only hit! Visually, here's Omaha artist Jim Jacobi's “Young Jaguar in Love” for you, from Kat Man Du. He was supposed to be “in” last week, but he said he had to hide to get satisfied with his pride before we/he could take a peek/peak. — MojoPoPlanetPower.com AQUARIUS (1.21-2.19) Here's Mercury, Mars and Neptune in that order. Mercury is conjunct with the Sun right now, presenting…

Heart Health Month, Scurvy and Vitamin C

England once ruled the world. Really! Sailing the greatest naval force ever assembled at the time, our friends the Brits sent their armada far and wide, girdling the globe and extending their empire. On the open sea for months at a time, thousands of miles from land, those traveling tars existed on a steady diet of salt pork and biscuits, foods that kept for months in barrels and boxes — sort of like Slim Jims and Pop Tarts only healthier. But scurvy soon boarded ship. Scurvy has been described throughout history. Even the ancient Egyptians recorded the symptoms. Amazingly, however, its specific cause remained a mystery for centuries, though fresh foods were found to remedy it. Around 1800, Dr. James…

Recruiting trail cools as the coaching search gets hot

All is fair in love and recruiting. If Bob Devaney didn’t say that he should have. The Irish Orator of Stadium Street — that name hasn’t quite caught on like I had hoped — would’ve delivered it with a wink and a laugh, charming the pens right out of reporters’ hands. That’s not really Bo Pelini’s approach. On Feb. 2 Pelini signed his best recruiting class to date, a fact that should have been big news given Nebraska’s inert end to the 2010 season. Instead, the typically gruff Pelini press conference focused on the bigger news leaked from Indiana’s head coach Kevin Wilson. Wilson let slip that defensive backs coach Corey Raymond had left the Hoosiers to take the same…

Kung Hei Fat Choi! Happy Chinese Year of the Cat. You scratch them, they'll scratch you back. Let's all be "jaguars in love," and dream until spring ... — MojoPoPlanetPower.com AQUARIUS (1.21-2.19) It's quite a party over at your house? Neptune's been in Aquarius for these last 13 "lucky" years, Mars is half way through Aquarius on its transit from mid-January through February 22, when it dives hand-in-hand-in-hand-in-hand with the Sun and Mercury conjunct Neptune into the Ocean of Pisces. Kick it hard until then. It'll be your season. Expect unexpected Sunny weather on the Leo Full Moon the 18th. Wear red (Mars) to get ahead. Put your head down and charge large on your literary (Mercury) career.…

High on Grass: The Meat We Eat

“Little Boy Blue, come blow your horn. The sheep’s in the meadow, the cow’s in the corn.” Stop and think why Little Boy Blue was called to keep the cows out of the corn. Any farmer or rancher will tell you: If a cow eats its fill of corn, it dies. Because a cow, like all ruminant animals, was not designed by nature to eat corn — or any grain, for that matter. Corn will kill a cow as surely as Roundup kills plants. We’ve brought this topic to the table many times in the past and recently published research brings it to our attention again. Good for you. The 2011 British Journal of Nutrition, Volume 105, just published a…

Cosmic Forecast for Jan. 27-Feb. 2

Kung Hei Fat Choi! Happy Chinese New Year of the Cat, Feb. 3, falling (as the Chinese New Year always does) the day after the New Moon in Aquarius, which is at 8:31 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, taking us from the wild, intractable, ferocious El Tigre to the domesticated, aloof, serene La Gata. Get the message? Time to take it home. Here kitty, kitty … — MojoPoPlanetPower.com AQUARIUS (1.21-2.19) It’s your turn to burn. Any sunshine is from your sign. You are the Water Bearer, the sharer of the electric light-blue hue of altruistic lightning/electricity hurled from the third eye (an “enlightened” pineal gland, the brain of the brain) toward deeper, scientifically relevant TRUTHS. Invention, intuition, enlightenment…
