When life gives you lemons, make pie. At least, that’s what Omaha-based writer/comedian, Tony Endelman, author of Randy Penny: Cordially F@#*ing with People and I Hope There’s Pie, a recently released collection of personal essays about his life, touches upon in his latest book. “I was always the class comedian, but never really the class clown. I was the kid with the witty comment. I’ve always been a huge smart ass,” says the University of Wisconsin graduate.

It’s Endelman’s apparent lifelong penchant for cheekiness that inspired a practical joke at the office.  “I really wanted to (mess) with one of my bosses. So, I sent him an email (messing) with him.”

Death by Medicine

On January 11, 2012, the national Center for Disease Control published its National Vital Statistics Report, Volume 60, Number 4. (http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nvsr/nvsr60/nvsr60_04.pdf) It’s the annual list of what kills Americans. This year’s tally was notable to the mainstream media because homicide dropped out of the top 15 as a cause of death in the good ol’ USA.

Now one might think that the CDC is performing a tremendous public service by telling how fraught life in America is and the things we should be on guard for if we want to stay alive. However, the CDC fails to warn us about some of the most dangerous threats to our health: modern medicine and the drugs it prescribes.

Cosmic Forecast, Jan. 12-Jan. 18

Welcome to the last full week of the Year of the Cat. The New Moon in Aquarius on January 23rd marks the emergence of the Year of the Dragon. Take what you’ve gathered in your domestic situation and play it dynamically for this coming year’s participation. Turn your pretty purrrrrr — for sure — into a fiery RROOOAARRR! Tell me what you know about dragons… Dragons represent the powers inherent in nature. In our cultural heritage, dragons are fought with swords and dispatched, a la St. George and the Archangel Michael. In Oriental cultures, dragons have to be/are outwitted and subdued. Study dragon lore this year, and dynamically take charge of your coming karma. Start now. Gather your/any gold…

Old Home Week

You may have time-honored home remedies around the house that can address any number of ailments. Minerals, foods, plants and herbs have been used for thousands of years. They’re often inexpensive and effective; more so than the nostrums modern-day medicos push on us. If used more often, the cost of health care would be lower.

Supplements, herbals and vitamins are often recommended for eliminating or addressing common health complaints. The thing is, that often requires a special trip to the health food store and those items are so specialized, you might only use them for a singular purpose. Things like valerian root tincture for insomnia or fish oil for heart health or vitamin C for immune system fortification…

Mojo Goes Mayan

Suppose we take a little theoretical trip back to pre-technology, before cars, planes, telephones and the modern advantages of electricity. Let’s say we live in the valley where our ancestors dwelt, and this little valley has answered the tribal needs of 200 or so members for all these years past, and all is good. The past has proven that our tribe of 200 or so can live and sustain itself year in and year out, with all our physical needs for survival provided. Let’s say that the elders take a survey — a census — and we find that there are now actually 250 members in our tribe. These extra numbers can/will impact our tribe’s chances for survival. Without…

On to 2012

It’s the time of year when we get to make predictions. It’s a fairly irresponsible task for writers because few readers go back to check and see how the pundits did in predicting this past year. Full disclosure: This writer was just ambiguous enough with 2011 predictions to fall outside the margin of error! But let’s see what was “predicted” in our January, 2011 column and how we fared: “With the 2010 Food Safety Act, the demise of natural food continues.” True. 2011 did indeed see heavy-handed government interference with people trying to grow or produce their own food or medicine. There were multiple armed raids on milk-producing farms and produce growers in Pennsylvania, Missouri, California (several), Minnesota, Wisconsin…
