Feeding the 5000

With 1 in 5 children and 1 in 7 adults in Omaha facing food insecurity, ending waste is a crucial step toward ending hunger. The majority of Nebraska’s landfill consists of edible food being thrown out, and Saving Grace Food Rescue is on a mission to put an end to the brutal cycle of waste, increase food cost, and hunger. Last weekend, Saving Grace rallied to make 5,000 free lunches from ingredients they rescued from grocery stores, farms, community gardens, gas stations, and caterers. Bryan High School’s culinary students got hands-on training as they helped prep food for the event. To learn more about Saving Grace’s mission head to http://savinggracefoodrescue.org/

Oodles of Noodles

The Reader was at Ramen Fest last weekend serving as a judge in the jam-packed noodle celebration. The 11 vendors cooked for days on end to produce between 700 and 900 servings each of the traditional soup. Lines formed well before the noon opening of the event, which raised money and non-perishable items for The Foodbank of the Heartland.  Sunday Night Ramen took the top prize this year, but the competition was steep. Founder Javid Dabestani spent a whole year refining his plans for the event, and had more ideas for next year before the end of the day. Thank you to everyone for making it such an exciting event, and thank you to Dabestani for including The Reader!
