Pick: Typhoon

September 16
Typhoon w/ Radiation City
The Waiting Room Lounge, 6212 Maple St.
9 p.m., $10, onepercentproductions.com

Labelmates Typhoon and Radiation City are both promising Pacific Northwest indie pop acts, but the two bands boast distinctive and different approaches. Typhoon is an expansive orchestral pop act, led by emotive singer Kyle Morton. The band tosses in everything from violin and ukulele to brassy horn arrangements in its intricately conceived songs. Listen to a few songs and it's not hard to see why Typhoon has been invited to play with indie stalwarts the Decemberists. Radiation City opens their third album Animals in the Median with "Zombies", a low-key songs that builds into a steady backbeat groove with the laidback vocals of singer Elisabeth Ellison. Radiation City is a band that's obviously culled songwriting lessons from both the experimental and pop ends of the indie spectrum, as they use tricky rhythms and intriguing keyboard and guitar flourishes to adorn and lift up simple, but tuneful pop songs.
