Pick: La Luz

July 23
La Luz w/ Adult Films, Killer Blow
The Sweatshop Gallery, 2727 North 62nd St.
9 p.m., $5, facebook.com/sweatshopgalleryomaha

Seattle-based La Luz writes effortless, hushed indie-pop played with the simple touch of a band that knows less is more. There's surf and 60s girl group influences at play in the band's sound, though the secret weapon is the organ-sounding Korg keyboard lines, which suggest dusty garage pop 45s. Sweet, shared vocals bring it back to indie pop and its a sound worth swaying or even dancing to. The band formed last summer and quickly caught the ear of Burger Records. The California label released their first EP and now it appears as if Suicide Squeeze will release the band's full length later this year. The sweet pop sounds will abound at this show, with Adult Films and Killer Blow on tap. Killer Blow is particularly worth catching, as Baby Tears' Todd VonStup is pulled into new directions by writing pop songs with his drumming/singing wife, Genie Molkentine.
