Pick: Hue Blanc’s Joyless Ones

April 28th
Hue Blanc's Joyless Ones w/ Killer Blow and Silent Drape Runners
The Sydney, 5918 Maple St.
9 p.m., $5

By combining the menace of British post-punk with a lo-fi Midwestern garage rock rattle, Hue Blanc's Joyless Ones have crafted a take on punk rock that squirms its way into new places. It's hard to overlook the influence that Wisconsin has on the band's working-class rock songs. Sneering vocals often meet up with directly melodic guitar riffs, counterbalancing each other while the two ends seem to intertwine. It's a sound that seems to meet somewhere between the Stooges' Detroit and the Oblivians' Memphis, with an ominous heat all its own. Omaha's Killer Blow headlines this show, playing their own evil twists on boy-girl pop duos. Killer Blow pushes the sweet vocals of Genie Molkentine into a primal scream, as her basic drumming thump is coarsened by the shards of guitar noise channeled by her cohort Todd VonStup.
