Pick: Flight Metaphor CD release show

August 23
Flight Metaphor CD Release Show w/ Skypiper
Slowdown, 729 North 14th St.
9 p.m., $7 at the door, theslowdown.com

Local melodic alternative pop-rock act Flight Metaphor will unveil their latest tunes at a release show celebrating their new CD EP, Redirection. The four-piece band is anchored by brothers Bill and Mike Harvat, who are joined by Bradley Tyler Moore and Cody Villarreal. The CD is the band's first new recording since 2010. The band is also the first EP to feature Moore and Villareal as members of the band, as both joined in 2011. The band recorded the release with Cody Bailey at Bailey Recording and Doug Van Sloun at Focus Mastering mastered the disc. The band plays a big-sounding batch of alternative rock songs that pulses along with a host of pop-smart, but cool influences. Flight Metaphor soaks up the most important lessons on pairing ear-pleasing melodies with a toe-tappingly brisk rhythm section, succinctly folding in the best elements of early Weezer, the Foo Fighters, Jimmy Eat World and Blink-182. None of the influences come through as obvious, which is a feat of originality that Flight Metaphor also proves adept at pulling off.
