Behind the seemingly-simple Americana folk pop played by Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros is a conceptual backstory of the fictional Edward Sharpe, a messianic figure dreamed up by bandleader Alex Ebert. In the band's backstory, Sharpe came to save mankind but got significantly sidetracked by falling in love. As they story and sound coalesced around Ebert's new project, he and his bandmates retreated to Laurel Canyon, where they made a debut album that hung on Southern California's 70s country-rock heritage, sprinkled with indie-folk relevancy. The band made a nearly immediate impact thanks to their great single "Home", which became inescapable for a time in 2010. The band will release their self-titled third album in late July. For Ebert, the band also presented a personal redemption, after recovering from addiction and rising from the ashes of his previous act, the major label rock act Ima Robot.
