Blitzen Trapper have wasted no time in releasing records and now are on the verge of unveiling their seventh full-length, simply titled VII. The Portland-based band formed in 2000 and began filtering country rock and acoustic folk through a hyperactive indie rock lens, creating a world where Pavement, spaced-out keyboard prog, Neil Young and power pop all collided in the dusty story songs of bandleader Eric Earley. 2007's Wild Mountain Nation brought the band into national prominence and 2008's Furr, especially the song "Black River Killer", cemented the band's reputation for penning intriguing tales of death, love and transformation. The first previews of VII, which isn't out until late October, seem to find the band working on its most emotionally-resonant, direct batch of songs. "Ever Loved Once" seems indicative of this, with banjo and acoustic guitar leading the way in a rustic shuffle.
