Leading Ladies & More

The extremely talented, sassy and smoldering Cassie Taylor plays Lincoln’s Zoo Bar next Wednesday, Aug. 7, 6-9 p.m. Taylor and her band the Soul Cavalry also have an opening set at The 21st Saloon on Thursday, Aug. 8, 5:30 p.m.  The U.K.’s Bex Marshall is featured. Marshall is a nominee for Best Album of the Year and Best Female Vocalist in the British Blues Awards. She is making a name for herself with her earthy vocals and guitar skills, made even more interesting with her instrument of choice being an acoustic steel-top resonator. One critic describes her 2013 release House of Mercy as “Bonnie Raitt and Led Zep jamming in an Everglades moonshine joint.”

Eilen Jewell
Eilen Jewell’s haunting Americana takes the stage at Lincoln’s Zoo Bar Thursday, Aug. 1, 6-9 p.m. Jewell has performed in Omaha several times as part of the Sunday Roadhouse series and her smoky, lyrical voice has won her fans from NPR to Tom Hanks.

Stay Hip
Last week a rash of cancellations happened after the paper hit the streets. Remember you can check the online Hoodoo at thereader.com where I try to update any late-breaking information with a writer’s note.

Catch them at Barley Street Tavern Saturday, Aug. 3, 9 p.m. and at Duffy’s in Lincoln Sunday, Aug. 4, 8 p.m. Wheat was filmed in 2011 by the HearNebraska.org/Love Drunk Video tour.
