FASH FLOOD

This past Sunday, designer Mark Bridges won the award for Best Costume Design at the 84th Annual Academy Awards for his work on modern silent film, The Artist. Costume design is often a position that comes without much glamour or recognition. While Bridges isn’t a household name to most, you may have seen his designs in films such as There Will Be Blood, Boogie Nights and The Fighter.

Film favorites like Titanic and The Godfather would be nothing without the talented teams of costume designers whose designs transport us to places and times gone by. Through April 29thDurham Museum visitors will experience five centuries of fashion and style, as interpreted by some of the most celebrated costume designers of our time at an exhibit called CUT! Costume and the Cinema.

Exhibit visitors can view forty-three period costumes from films including Sherlock Holmes, Academy Award winner The Duchess, and favorites Pirates of the Caribbean, Sense and Sensibility, and The Phantom of the Opera. Drama, comedy, fantasy, history and adventure are all represented through costumes worn by famous film stars such as Johnny Depp, Daniel Craig, Kate Winslet, Sandra Bullock, Uma Thurman and Angelica Huston among many others.

On Saturday March 24th, a fashion show will take place as part of the exhibit. Presented by Costume Designer Amanda Fehlner, The Art of Costume Design Presentation and Fashion Show kicks off at 1 p.m., accompanied by an interactive discussion on costume design. Fehlner’s creations from numerous productions such as Julius Caesar, The Secret Garden and Urinetown, The Musical will be displayed as part of the costume fashion show. Due to limited seating for this special event, reservations are required. Please call 402.444.5071 or email reservations@DurhamMuseum.org to make reservations to attend. Cost of admission applies to all CUT! special events unless otherwise noted and members may attend for free.
