Dig It: The Secrets of Soil

Through Dec. 26 Dig It: The Secrets of Soil Durham Museum, 801 S. 10th St. “The Ugly Gardener” program Oct. 12, 6:30 p.m., $7, $6 seniors, $5 children 3-12, FREE for Durham members and children 2 and under 444.5397, durhammuseum.org Whether you loathe scrubbing it out of fingernails, scraping it off your shoes, or love the warm soft feeling of it around your fingers gardening, it’s all around: dirt. Created by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History and displayed solely at the Durham outside of D.C., Dig It! explores fungi, bacteria, worms in medicines, food, fiber, paint, cosmetics and pottery; and in food production, infrastructure construction, and environmental protection. Visitors can ponder life, death and decay in the “Matters of Life and Death Theatre,” and compete in the “chef challenge” creating soil with various ingredients. For those wanting to learn more about no-till farming methods with expert Sheila O’Riley, attend the special event Tuesday. Dig in!
