Cutting Room for June 1

  • Girls rock! And that’s not just a warm-fuzzy I’m passing to the other gender in the hopes that they’ll like me back; it’s a defensible fact provable by evidence provided by Film Streams Ruth Sokolof Theater (filmstreams.org). On Tuesday, July 6 at 7 pm, the theater will buddy up with Omaha Girls Rock to present, um, Girls Rock! The Movie. The 2007 documentary about Portland’s rock and roll camp for girls will be screened prior to a panel discussion about Omaha’s own Rock Camp for Girls (omahagirlsrock.com), which runs July 11-16 at the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Department of Music. To all the lasses who throw up the horns, mosh it up and make with the rockin’, we salute you.

  • I’m a big, big fan of Marcus Theatres’ “Reel Movies for Real Needs” film series. The series creates a better environment for special needs children by screening movies with lower sound volume and brighter lighting in the theater, not to mention an increased tolerance of verbal reactions and other demonstrative behaviors. Village Pointe Cinema (marcustheatres.com/Theatre/TheatreDetail/165/) will show Kung Fu Panda 2 on June 4 and Cars 2 on June 25. More information is available through the theater. As someone who believes in the calming and often transformative power that the imagination inherent in movies can provide, it’s so nice to see it offered to those who don’t often get to experience it in theaters as it should be.

  • Terrence Malick’s Tree of Life won the prestigious Palme D’Or award at the Cannes Film Festival, while Kirsten Dunst walked away with best actress for her role in Lars von Trier’s Melancholia. Not to be outdone, von Trier won the equally prestigious “Reminder That Nobody Should Joke About Hitler” award.
