Cutting Room for July 20

  • Although “Blossom” trained us to believe something labeled a “special program” is going to tackle icky molestation or teen drinking issues, that’s not what Marcus Theaters means by “special summer programming.” Starting July 28, Village Pointe Cinema will offer various theatrical and musical performances, including the Globe Theatre’s performance of both parts of “Henry IV” and soprano Renee Fleming and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. Prices and showtimes vary, so hit up marcustheatres.com for more details. With this much fine art, the one detail I can promise: No Joey Lawrence.

  • Film Streams at the Ruth Sokolof Theater (filmstreams.org) has not one but two notably noteworthy notes to note this week. First up, on Tuesday, August 9 at 7 p.m., the theater will buddy up with the Latino Academic Achievement Council, Nebraska Appleseed and Plains States Region Anti-Defamation League to present a screening and discussion about the film When We Stop Counting. Despite the title, the documentary does not follow the death of The Count from “Sesame Street,” but follows Latino students in Crete, Nebraska, which should prompt healthy discourse about education and immigration. Film Streams is also getting ready for their week-long 2011 Local Filmmakers Showcase, which runs from August 19-25. We’ll have an in-depth look at that event in the next few weeks. Look at me foreshadow!

  • Don’t confuse the following two summer series from Rave Motion Pictures. Although films in both series only cost $5 and both are showing at the Westroads 14 from July 21 to August 25, one is the Rave Senior Classics series and the other is the Rave Horror Film series. If you confuse them, you will accidentally send Grandpa to Texas Chainsaw Massacre instead of Cocoon. I recommend checking ravemotionpictures.com carefully.
