Cutting Room for January 18

  • If you like your comedy web-based and sexually transmitted, “Herpe Betty” may be calling your name. Straight outta O-town, the first episode in the proposed ongoing series features a score by Jacob Thiele (The Faint) and stars Craig Dee (Tilly and the Wall), Sam Martin (Capgun Coup) and Thiele, along with Michelle Murphy and Joey Edwards (from the Omaha comedy group “Do It With Us”). As for the plot, well… Let’s just say there are esoteric misadventures and bizarre comedy beats aplenty in this, um, unique endeavor. The series is looking for funding, so if you have a few shekels to spare, hit up their fundraising site at kickstarter.com/projects/53586275/herpe-betty-webseries, where you can watch the first episode. I can promise that you haven’t seen anything quite like it.
  • It may be the slimmest month in terms of days, but February is fat with activity over at Film Streams’ Ruth Sokolof Theater (filmstreams.org). On Feb 1 at 7 pm, things kick off with Urbanized, a documentary about issues that shape cities. It will be followed by a post-show discussion with folks from the Omaha Planning Department, the Metropolitan Planning Agency and Seventy Five North Revitalization Corp. Then, on Feb 7 at 7 pm, Miss Representation will be screened. This documentary about the portrayal of women in mainstream media will be followed by a discussion moderated by Ellie Archer, the executive director of the Women’s Fund of Omaha, and featuring Nebraska State Senator Tanya Cook, Roberta Wilhelm (executive director of Girls Inc.) and Brook Hudson (former Miss Nebraska). Finally, on Feb 22 at 7 pm, the documentary American Teacher will be screened for free, followed by a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Nancy Edick (dean of the College of Education at UNO) and featuring Nebraska State Senator Brenda Council and fourth-grade teacher Maddie Fennell (chair of the National Commission on Effective Teachers and the 2007 Nebraska Teacher of the Year). Hit their site for more details on this trifecta of awesome events!
