Cutting Room for February 29

  • Although I would never take Film Streams (filmstreams.org) for granted, I am thrilled to see them once-more granted. That is to say, the theater has received a $7500 grant from the Lincoln Financial Foundation to support the Forever Young Family and Children’s Series. And as the car dealers love to say, “they’re passing the savings on to you!” From now until the end of the series, which wraps up at the end of March, tickets are dropping to a crazy $5 for general audiences and an unbelievable $2.50 for Film Streams members and Lincoln Financial employees and their families. That means you can see Fantastic Mr. Fox, Animation Block Party: Animation for Kids and Looney Tunes Collection for a new low-low price! I like talking like a salesman. You can’t tell right now, but pretend you see me flailing my arms about and screaming while I read this.
  • Although it may regrettably sound like the kind of site you wipe from your browser history, Tugg.com may be the next big step in the fast-moving relationship between movies and social media. Currently in its beta stage, the site works like this: Let’s say you want to see a movie that isn’t screening in your area…hypothetically, let’s say it’s the new Miley Cyrus documentary We All Thought You’d Be Gone By Now. If it’s in the Tugg library, you create an event using the site, choosing the price, time and theater from a list of participating companies. Then you try to use whatever means you can to get people to commit to coming (facebook, twitter, newspapers, skywriting, smoke signals, graffiti, or whatever). Once a minimum number of guests confirmed, Tugg takes care of the logistics, and WHAMMO: you get see your movie. This is a fried slice of hot genius in my opinion, as it’s low risk for everyone involved. Keep your eyes peeled for more on this soon.

For years, one rivalry has dwarfed all others. No, it’s not The Chicago Bears and The Green Bay Packers or Right and Left Twix. It’s “readers” versus “watchers,” as in those who (gasp) read books and...
