Cutting Room for August 31

  • Someone cue up a Toby Keith song, Freedom is finally coming to Omaha. Of course, in this case we’re referencing a documentary that investigates alternatives to fossil fuels, not the flag-waving independence that Mr. Keith has assured us all is not, in fact, free. The film, which I’m going to just guess is the first and only collaboration involving Newt Gingrich, Jason Mraz and Deepak Chopra, is actually rolling into Omaha as part of the “Freedom Tour.” A huge bus that runs entirely on delightfully clean energy will roll through the Big O and help promote not only the film but discussions of our energy use. For more information, hit up thefreedomfilm.com, or just ask Ed Begley Jr. for details; he’ll set you straight.

  • Kevin Smith, who previously vowed to make Hit Somebody his last movie, is now making Hit Somebody his last two movies. Because America’s need for an in-depth exploration of the life of a hockey player is insatiable, the film will be divided into two parts: Hit Somebody: Home and Hit Somebody: Away. The former will be PG-13, the latter will be R, and both are likely to suck. Sorry, Kev. I’m still not over Zack and Miri Make a Porno.

  • The number one movie rumor I am most consistently asked about is Ghostbusters 3. The cycle goes like this: Every few months, if only to fend off false Wikipedia edits about his demise, Dan Aykroyd says some clever lie about how they’re “almost ready” or how a script is “in the works.” This time he has said that the film is going to happen with or without Bill Murray. No, it won’t. Sorry to crush dreams here, but unless Murray flip flops and decides he’s in, Aykroyd is just a liar with a lot of Ys in his last name.

For years, one rivalry has dwarfed all others. No, it’s not The Chicago Bears and The Green Bay Packers or Right and Left Twix. It’s “readers” versus “watchers,” as in those who (gasp) read books and...
