Live Review: Bloc Party

“We came a long way to entertain you Omaha,” hollered Bloc Party front man Kele Okereke at last night’s show at the Slowdown, and entertain they did. The London band put on a furious, career spanning set that excited from start to finish.

Opening for the band was Bear Mountain, a synth pop group hailing from Vancouver B.C. that mixed chopped vocal samples, heavy tropical drums, and spritely guitar lines to create a bubbly sound reminiscent of Cut Copy or the Friendly Fires. Yet, while Bear Mountain served as a nice warm up, it was the boys from London that truly set it on fire.

The band wasted no time brining the heat by opening with the funk punk “So He Begins to Lie,” the first cut off the band’s most recent album, Four. From there, they kept the energy high with varied songs, including the Gang of Four-esque post punk of “Team A", frenetic electronics of “Trojan Horse” and the tight guitar interplay of “Banquet.” The band even debuted a new song called “French Exit”, which saw Okereke half-rapping in between blasts of feedback from guitarist Russell Lissack Telecaster.

The set ended with back-to-back encores that were heavy on hits, including their 2005 smash “Helicopter” and fan favorite “Like Eating Glass.” They even found time to work in a cover of Rihanna’s “We Found Love.”

As the show drew to a close and Okereke asked the crowd if they loved the performance as much as the band did, you could tell that they had indeed found it.
