Grit, Guitars & Funk

Guitarist Kelly Richey’s hard-charging power blues trio hits Lincoln’s Zoo Bar Wednesday, April 3, 6-9 p.m., and makes their 21st Saloon debut Thursday, April 4, 5:30-8:30 p.m. With rocking guitar licks and gritty vocals, the Cincinnati artist has been playing guitar since she was 15 years old. She has been active in that region for nearly 20 years with over 15 solo releases to her credit. Check Richey’s “Fast Drivin’ Mama” on Youtube. Her new disc Sweet Spirit (Sweet Lucy Records) dropped March 19. Richey and her drummer Jyn Yates set a seriously rockin’ standard for women blues players. They are joined on the new CD and tour by Cincinnati funk player Freekbass who began his career as a protege of the great Bootsy Collins and is well known in funk and hip hop circles.

Bernie Worrell Orchestra
Funk icon Bernie Worrell coincidentally contributed keys to Richey’s new disc and was a mentor to Freekbass. The Bernie Worrell Orchestra plays Lincoln’s Zoo Bar Tuesday, April 9, with Josh Hoyer & The Shadowboxers opening the 7 p.m. show. Worrell gets funky at The 21st Saloon Thursday, April 11, 5:30 p.m. with The 9’s opening. Worrell was a founding member of Parliament/Funkadelic and played with the Talking Heads during their Speaking in Tongues and Stop Making Sense period. See bernieworrellorchestra.com.
