Cutting Room for September 7

In direct disobedience of The Beatles, Film Streams (filmstreams.org) has opted not to save things that are free for either the birds or the bees, choosing instead to share them with us twice over.

  • First, on Tuesday Sept 20 at 7 p.m., Native American Public Telecommunications (NAPT) will partner with Omaha’s art theater to show a free screening of Reel Injun, a film exploring the depiction of Native Americans in the media. Spoiler alert: Said depiction often sucks. The presentation is sponsored by the Native American Studies Program at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and will feature a post-show discussion. This screening is also produced in partnership with NAPT’s fourth biennial VisionMaker Film Festival, which will be held at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center (theross.org) and Sheldon Art Museum in Lincoln. What’s better than a thought-provoking experience for the grand price of free?
  •
  • Howsabout two thought-provoking experiences for the grand price of free? On Thursday October 6 at 7 p.m., Film Streams is holding a free screening of The Quilted Conscience, a documentary about the relationship between 16 Sudanese-American girls and a quilter’s guild in Grand Island, Nebraska. The event is presented by the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Grace Abbott School of Social Work and the University of Nebraska Foundation. It will feature a post-show discussion with director John Sorenson. Tickets can be reserved by emailing Maggie Wood at maggie@filmstreams.org, and thanks to Beardmore Chevrolet Subaru, you won’t pay a dime for them. Sew what are you waiting for? Get it? I said “sew”… because it’s about quilting. Hey, at least the jokes are free, too.
