Cutting Room for September 21

  • As a fan of clever acronyms and a supporter of equality, I’m double thrilled to tell you that The Institute for Career Advancement Needs (ICAN) and Nebraska Educational Telecommunications (NET) are teaming up to screen Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide to the University of Nebraska at Omaha College of Business Administration’s Mammel Hall on Thursday, Sept 27 from 7-10. It won’t cost you a dime, which is a weird way to say free considering almost nothing costs a dime anymore. Following the movie, there will be a “coffee and conversation” dialogue with various experts from different fields. Seating is limited, so shoot LeAnn Adkins an email at leann@icanglobal.net if you plan on showing up. Tell her Ryan sent you. She doesn’t know me, so she’ll be confused, and it will be funny.
  • Never one to loaf about, the good folks over at Film Streams have put the finishing touches on their latest work of cinematic awesomeness, which is the Third Annual Local Filmmakers Showcase, which runs Oct 19-25. Here’s the deets (people still say “deets,” right? Dagnabbit, I’m so bad as slang.): The Faint, a superfun goodtime local rock band, have selected 10 films by nine different directors, which have been crammed into one 115-minute show. Head to filmstreams.org for all the news that’s fit to print on this one! Wow, is my slang getting older as this column goes on? I better stop before I start sounding like a sexist 1920s private eye who calls everybody “dame” or “dollface.”

Cutting Room provides breaking local and national movie news … complete with added sarcasm. Send any relevant information to film@thereader.com. Check out Ryan on Movieha!, a weekly half-hour movie podcast (movieha.libsyn.com/rss), catch him on the radio on CD 105.9 (cd1059.com) on Fridays at around 7:30 a.m. and on KVNO 90.7 (KVNO.org) at 8:30 a.m. on Fridays and follow him on Twitter (twitter.com/thereaderfilm).

Werner Herzog is one of my favorite things about life on earth. He’s only a badass documentarian who once completed an interview after being shot because “it was not a significant bullet” and cameoed...
