Cutting Room for September 14

  • Thanks to studios that saw it as a way to cut production costs, I have fictional “found footage” fatigue. Symptoms include violent hurling anytime someone says they want to see the next Paranormal Activity movie. But this condition doesn’t extend to The Found Footage Festival (foundfootagefest.com), which will be hitting The Waiting Room (waitingroomlounge.com) on Wednesday Sept 26 at 8 pm (tickets are $10). Why? Because this is actual found footage, as in videos found in thrift stores that cover subjects like “how to care for your ferret” and “sexy treadmilling.” If the former didn’t get you, the latter will…and God help us all if you’re someone with an interest in both.
  • In a move I can only hope hops an ocean: The Prince Charles Cinema in London will be deploying workers wearing black skintight bodysuits during movies to keep audiences in check. Movie ninjas. They are hiring movie ninjas. No word on whether they will have the authority to kill, but one can only hope. Nothing would fill my heart with more joy than watching a phone light up with a text only to see a throwing star bury itself into the skull of its owner.
  • Against reason, in violation of good taste and because it was demanded by no one, Heathers is going to become a TV show on the Bravo network. That’s right, the subversive cult classic that somewhat justified the existence of Christian Slater and Shannon Doherty is going to become a weekly fixture that will follow Veronica, played by Winona Ryder in the film, as she moves back to Sherwood with her teenage daughter, who goes to school with the “Ashleys,” the daughters of the surviving “Heathers.” Ugh. More about this as the show moves from mere bad idea to badly executed reality.
