Cutting Room for November 23

  • It’s possible you have “Sherlock fatigue.” Symptoms include a nauseous reaction to the name Lucy Liu, a propensity to rave like a madman about the brilliance of Benedict Cumberbatch’s BBC show and a violent reaction to the following news: they are remaking Young Sherlock Holmes. But don’t worry; the guy who wrote The Lion King 1 ½, The Jungle Book 2 and Tarzan 2, all direct-to-video sequels, is handling the script duty. This isn’t “elementary” for dear Watson so much as an impending crime against cinema that it won’t take a super sleuth to solve.
  • This isn’t really movie news, but I have to share: a dude really made a house fly with balloons like in Up. Jonathan Trappe, a professional “cluster balloonist,” got a tiny house in the air using only tethered balloons. Let’s forget for a moment we’re actually in the midst of a helium shortage worldwide and embrace the sheer adorable and fuzzy-feeling nature of this totally pointless endeavor.
  • As we slouch ever closer towards the Gomorra of Star Wars Episodes VII-IX, we have some yin and yang news. They have hired two writers for Episodes VIII and IX: Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg. While the latter has penned the timeless classics xXx: State of the Union and X-Men: The Last Stand, the former just so happens to have written Raiders of the Lost Ark and, oh yeah, Empire Strikes Back. In the interest of full disclosure, I should also mention that Kasdan’s last script was for the poo-heavy trainwreck Dreamcatcher. Still, getting the guy who wrote the best Star Wars movie ever to write the next Star Wars movies has to warm even the most carbonite-frozen heart.
