Cutting Room for March 28

  • In a sad societal statement, this week I heard more of a public outcry about what Michael Bay said about the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles live-action movie than about the Trayvon Martin case. My Twitter feed and Facebook blew up with the kind of outrage that should follow a racially motivated murder and not, say, the revelation that the TMNT origin is being rewritten so that they are space aliens. Don’t get me wrong, this is categorically stupid, but it doesn’t even necessarily rank at the top of Bay’s worst atrocities when you consider what he routinely does with a camera to women.
  • For those keeping score at home, we will soon have zero cinematic adaptations of “Catcher in the Rye” and at least one of the life story of Ol’ Dirty Bastard. Dirty White Boy will feature “The Wire’s” Michael K. Williams as the deceased former Wu-Tanger in a recounting of how the rapper was conned by an unknown VH1 production assistant into letting him manage his career. Oh yeah, and it sort of worked…until he died. With the makers of last year’s Oscar winner The Beginners on board, how great would it be to hear “For the role of Ol’ Dirty Bastard, the Oscar goes to…”
  • A study from The Hollywood Reporter found that more than 50% of people age 18-34 think that using social media isn’t just acceptable, they would seek out theaters that would let them do that, which is 100% terrible. The study found other interesting things, like how one in three people have been influenced to see a movie based on a Facebook or Twitter post, but I couldn’t get past that first fact. If you’re one of those people, I highly recommend this new place to watch movies where you can use all the social media you want. It’s called “home.”
