Cutting Room for June 8

  • Because this year’s College World Series takes place a hop, skip and a jump (and you can probably leave out the jump) from the front doors of Film Streams, the theater goes into a different scheduling cycle starting June 15. On gamedays, one hour prior to the first game’s start time, the theater converts into the artiest sports bar you’ve ever been to, complete with beer and a huge screen on which to watch the games. On non-gamedays, it’s business as usual, with screenings of Peace, Love & Misunderstanding and The Cabin in the Woods (an early contender for my best-of-the-year shortlist). Only in Omaha can you watch sports in an art house movie theater. Go, go, Big O!
  • It’s also worth noting that, unlike my staunchly conservative grandfather and anyone who remembers Monster in Law, Film Streams loves them some Jane Fonda. Not only is the iconic actress highlighting Feature IV, the biggest fundraiser of their year, but from June 29 until August 30, the theater will be honoring the former Mrs. Turner with a repertory series of films. This 11-film run will include, among others, Klute, Julia, The China Syndrome, Nine to Five and, of course, Barbrella, the movie that encouraged puberty in many a young lad. If you have a question about individual showtimes, head to filmstreams.org. If you have a question about Barbarella’s costume, keep it to yourself.
  • It may be a wee bit early, but seeing as how Bat-fans can be bananas, it’s worth noting that Aksarben Cinema (aksarbencinema.com) will be showing Batman Begins and The Dark Knight immediately before the midnight debut of The Dark Knight Rises on July 19. Ten bucks gets you admission to the first two flicks, while TDKR is regular priced, and tickets are on sale as of June 11. No word on whether seductively dancing the Batusi is acceptable payment.
