Cutting Room for June 22

  • You down with O-P-E? That’s right, I’m dropping a 90s-era hip-hop euphemism for promiscuous carnal relations to remind you about the Omaha Performing Arts and Cox Communications joint presentation of Music and Movies (or M&M as the cool kids are calling it). For the grand price of FREE, you can show up at the Holland Center’s East Lawn (12th and Douglas st) at 7:30 PM on July 1 and August 19 to chick-ity check out a live band followed by a dope movie (to be clear, that’s “dope” meaning “good” and not a screening of Reefer Madness). On July 1, The Kris Lager Band will get all up in your ears’ business followed by a showing of Jurassic Park, still the illest dinosaur movie ever. On August 19, you can hear funky fresh jams by Funk Trek before watching the funk-nasty Shrek. If you hit up the website (omahaperformingarts.org), you can even order pre-made picnic baskets. Oh, SNAP! This write-up was sponsored by the Coalition for Dated Slang Terms and their president Tone Loc.

  • Everyone around these parts knows Film Streams (filmstreams.org) is a mighty special theater, but now we have even more proof. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences took a brief break from tinkering with the Oscars—last year’s ceremony is still going I believe—in order to award Film Streams’ Visiting Artists Program with a $7,500 institutional grant. Hey, check it out, they got an award right! The grant will help bring artists to Omaha for various screenings, workshops and performances and is nothing short of richly deserved. Hats off once more to Film Streams. Omaha’s sure lucky to have ya.
