Cutting Room for July 5

  • Fans will get up in arms over the reboot of Star Trek, but where is the outrage that Steven Spielberg is going to produce a remake of Grapes of Wrath? Put a nipple on Batman’s rubber suit and it scars a generation, but redo a film ranked in the top 25 of all time by the American Film Institute and everyone goes right back to Instagramming their appetizers. John Steinbeck’s book is one of the most important literary works in American history. I look forward to the new adaptation being directed by the guy who did Step Up 2 The Streets or something.
  • ‘Mericans don’t want filthy non-‘Mericans in their blockbusters! This extends beyond Johnny Depp’s dalliances and into Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which has managed to do something worse than employ Megan Fox. Both the iconic villain, Shredder, and the TMNT’s mentor, Splinter, were originally Japanese. Well hold the rice, please: Both characters have been whitewashed, with Shredder’s real name changed from Oroku Saki to “Eric Sachs.” Um, if they’re tossing out Japanese stuff, shouldn’t this be called Teenage Mutant Assault-Rifle-Bearing Turtles?
  • You probably don’t remember, but 20 years ago OJ Simpson killed a few people and got away with it. It’s absolutely stunning to me that we haven’t seen a Hollywood version yet. So now we’re going to see a Hollywood version. An American Mystery is a thriller that looks to dig up old feelings and, supposedly, new evidence with new suspects. It’s like how when sitcoms get stale they add a new baby, only instead of a new baby, it’s an alleged murder who didn’t do it because OJ totally did it.
