Cutting Room for February 8

  • If you’re a child of the 1990s, the phrase “Snootchie bootchies” doesn’t necessarily sound like the demented ramblings of a man with a massive head wound. The signature catch phrase of Jay from the beloved/loathed duo of Jay and Silent Bob will be uttered once more, as their creator, Kevin Smith, intends on resurrecting them for Jay and Silent Bob’s Super Groovy Cartoon Movie. Of course, the announcement of this part live-action/part R-rated animated comedy stands in direct opposition to Smith’s assertion that his forthcoming and supposedly Field of Dreams-esque hockey movie, Hit Somebody, was going to be his final film. But if we took celebrities at their word, a sober Lindsay Lohan could be voting for President Trump.
  • How will director Joe Carnahan follow-up his thoughtful and challenging wolf-punching epic, The Grey? If you guessed “by continuing to explore metaphysical and theological struggles,” congratulations on being an optimist, but you’re wrong. He’s going to direct a remake of Death Wish, the Charles Bronson vigilante flick that had a bajillion sequels. Although this move doesn’t inspire confidence, neither did the thought of Liam Neeson going mano-a-fang with furry beasts, and that turned out to be spectacular!
  • Jealous of Hollywood’s remake addiction, Broadway has decided to get in on the fun by snorting up a Tinseltown classic. Rumor has it that Back to the Future may be given the musical treatment on the great white way. I can see the songs now: the breakdance number “1.21 Jigawatts,” the climactic number “Get Your Damn Hands Off of Her” and the romantic ballad “Calvin Klein’s Underpants.” Is it wrong that I just made myself excited to see this?
