Cutting Room for August 2

  • A sad but cripplingly true fact: the majority of heterosexual married women who grew up watching The Sandlot would break their vows to get with Benny “The Jet” Rodriguez to this day. Don’t worry, he’s not coming to Omaha anytime soon. But the director/narrator of the film, David Mickey Evans, will be at Werner Ballpark  on Saturday, Aug 17, as 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment and the Omaha Stormchasers are celebrating the film’s 20th anniversary! At 8 pm, the film will be shown on the ballpark’s big screen, which is great because the open-air stadium means you’ll barely hear the crowd reciting every line of dialogue by heart.
  • If you couldn’t tell from my slobbering wet kiss of a review, I think Fruitvale Station is easily one of the year’s best films. Leave it to Film Streams (filmstreams.org) to do something better than just screening it. On Wednesday, Aug 14 at 7:30, a special screening of the movie will be followed by a post-show discussion with Haroula Rose, who was an associate producer on the film. I cannot stress how vital Fruitvale Station is in demonstrating the ability of cinema to provide crucial context and insight into lives we do not lead ourselves. Also, Michael B. Jordan is so totally going to be nominated for (and may win) an Oscar for this, so you can see it now and say “I told you so” to people later.
  • I’m totally going to take credit for this rumor: Warner Bros. supposedly wants an older version of Batman in Batman vs Superman, the upcoming mega-crossover. Is it a coincidence that this rumor came up just one day after The Reader’s podcast, Movieha! (movieha.libsyn.com), suggested this? I say nay! I am awaiting financial compensation for this idea and will settle for a simple screen credit proclaiming me and my podcast co-host, Matthew Lockwood, “really, really smart dudes.”

Cutting Room provides breaking local and national movie news … complete with added sarcasm. Send any relevant information to film@thereader.com. Check out Ryan on Movieha!, a weekly half-hour movie podcast (movieha.libsyn.com/rss), catch him on the radio on CD 105.9 (cd1059.com) on Fridays at around 7:30 a.m. and on KVNO 90.7 (KVNO.org) at 8:30 a.m. on Fridays and follow him on Twitter (twitter.com/thereaderfilm).
