Cutting Room for April 11

  • I’m a sucker for romantic comedies. Oh, I could try to shield my masculinity with a denial, but the reality is that I have, on more than one occasion, failed to turn the channel when Win a Date with Tad Hamilton was one. So it’s with joy that I announce Omaha will soon have its own horse in that genre race. On Thursday, April 19 at 7 pm, Aksarben Cinema (aksarbencinema.com) will host a screening of PerfectMatch, a feature-length film created by Omaha residents Mark Booker and Nic Roewert. The flick has a built-in one-line pitch, as it follows a man and woman who meets via an Internet dating site for which the man works…and at which he manipulates the site to create “a perfect match.” It’s like I always say, don’t trust anything you read on the Internet…but if you’re reading this on the Internet, my logic may have just accidentally created a mental Mobius strip from which there’s no escape.
  • While I definitely recommend the following cinematic experience, I do not recommend it for first dates. Film Streams (filmstreams.org) and the Institute for Holocaust Education are welcoming director Michael Kleiman on Thursday, May 3 at 7 pm for a screening of The Last Survivor. The definitely unromantic film follows the lives of survivors from a quartet of tragedies, including Rwanda, Darfur and the Congo. A post-show discussion will follow, so if you ignore my advice, be prepared for your date to ask Kleiman the question: “Can you believe I’m here under the pretense of romance?”
  • They’re making Raging Bull II. Don’t double check your calendar, April Fool’s Day has sailed by. This is a real thing humanity has chosen to do. The film is going to follow a young version of Robert DeNiro’s character from the iconic Martin Scorsese work, which none of those talented people returning. Remember when you saw that last crappy remake/sequel and exclaimed “what’s next?” This. This is next.
