OPS approves metal detectors at basketball games

The Omaha Public Schools board voted unanimously to put metal detectors outside certain OPS basketball games this winter. The board approved a $60,000 contract with a private security firm to operate the machines. OPS officials say the detectors will be used for high-profile games or when police recommend their use.

Deshawn Smith, 23, survived after being shot Dec. 5 while riding in a car near 42nd and Redman Ave. Police have made no arrests.

Murder suspect caught in Arizona

An Omaha man wanted for the Nov. 10 murder of Adrian Lessley was arrested Dec. 2 in Glendale, Ariz. Kevin Watt, 24, is believed to be the shooter in an altercation near 31st and Seward that left Lessley dead and wounded Jason Marion. Jeromie Wade, 28, was arrested on Nov. 11 and booked as an accessory to a felony in the incident. Watt awaits extradition to Omaha.

Small plane crashes near Eppley Airfield

A single-engine plane crashed north of Omaha's Eppley Airfield early Dec. 2. The unidentified pilot was the lone occupant in the plane and did not suffer serious injury. The plane left from Montana, but aviation authorities are still determining if Omaha was the pilot's final destination.

Man stabbed in South Omaha

Jose Cardenas, 26, survived after being stabbed late on Nov. 30 near 23rd and Vinton. Cardenas was transported to the VA Medical Center by a third party and told officers he was stabbed during a fight with a person over a previous altercation. Police have made no arrests.

Omaha soldiers headed for Afghanistan

Gov. Dave Heineman was on hand at Omaha Northwest High School on Nov. 28 to support hundreds of local soldiers as they said their farewells before deploying to Afghanistan. The 402nd Military Police Battalion is sending 147 men and women to Fort Bliss, Texas, for a week of training before the group ships overseas to operate a detention facility near Kabul. Branden Jackson, 24, survived after being shot Nov. 27 at 1843 N. 17th St. Police have made no arrests.

Missing plane crashes outside Norfolk

Two men are dead after a plane bound for Millard crashed east of Norfolk, Neb. Investigators believe the crash was weather-related. Search crews found the wreckage on the afternoon of Nov. 22. The plane, registered to a home in Ralston, departed from Chamberlain, S.D., at 5 p.m. on Nov. 21. Steven Schmillen, 63, of Omaha was the pilot of the plane.
