Gaffney Remembered, Magness at Zoo Bar & More

Sitting down to write this on April 17, I am remembering Chris Gaffney, who passed away three years ago on this date. He died after a brief but valiant battle with inoperable liver cancer. Gaffney was one of the most formidable singers of country and soul in his generation. He was just beginning to get the recognition he deserved. Thankfully his music remains with us. Just look up Chris Gaffney...

For the New Pornographers’ April 21 show at the Waiting Room, expect to see Neko Case (far left) as part of the line-up. “We have the ability to play as a six-piece, seven-piece and as an eight-piece. On our last big tour we were a 10-piece,” fellow NP vocalist Kathryn Calder says.
Full-time Pornographer

Early in the interview with New Pornographers vocalist/keyboard player Kathryn Calder I figured I'd try a bit of a joke. Calder said she was recovering from a solo show played the night before in Duncan, a small town an hour north of her home of Victoria, British Columbia. Four bands, two slices of vinyl, one distinctive sound

The dim, squalid confines of The Underwood Bar are a fine place to drink yourself into oblivion while playing a game of pool or pinball. Stir announces rest of 2011 line-up

Stir Concert Cove revealed the rest of its initial 2011 summer line-up last night at a party held inside Harrah’s Casino. A July 5 Black Keys show had been announced long ago -- in fact, it's been sold out for quite some time, too -- and Mumford & Sons (June 14) were announced as somewhat of a teaser to last night's event by Harrah's last week. As for the new announcements from last night,...

Hot Wax Holiday

We had time to kill before the 7:45 p.m. show at Aksarben Cinema, and having already grabbed a bite to eat decided for reasons of proximity to walk through Kohl's, whose overly ambitious catchphrase is "Expect Great Things." As I was strolling down one of the fluorescent-bright main aisles, somewhere between the jewelry counter and "notions" toward the checkout, I nearly stumbled over a stack of...
