Live Review: Bright Eyes at Westfair Amphiteater

I begin what seems like my 100th review of a Bright Eyes concert by saying that last Saturday night's performance at Westfair Amphitheater may have been his best. Simply put, Conor Oberst put on a rock concert. Not an indie-folk show; not an "intimate acoustic evening of personal confessions." A rock concert. As heavy a show as he's probably capable of or would ever want to do. You can say you...

Checking In: House of Loom

Right now, the only indication of just what is taking root at 1012 South 10th St. is a sticker on the front door. That bumper sticker-sized emblem represents loom, the multicultural-enriched dance night that has hopped across Omaha for the last five years. What lies inside is House of Loom, the nightclub vision of loom's Brent Crampton and his two partners, Jay Kline and Ethan Bondleid. They...

Chasing Conor: A look back on 13 years of interviews

We were driving downtown in my Mini Cooper this past weekend when a Bright Eyes song came on the iPod connected to my car stereo. I leaned forward and skipped past it. Teresa shot me a glance, and I said, "I'm mad at him right now." I'd been going back and forth with Bright Eyes' publicist, Press Here Publicity, since last December, trying to line up an interview with Conor Oberst in conjunction...

Davina Sizzles, 21st Saloon Blues & More

Davina & The Vagabonds from the Minneapolis area hit local stages twice this week. They are one of my favorite new bands on the touring scene. Pronounced Dah-VEE-na, this sassy keyboard player and singer-songwriter is making the jump from Twin Cities mainstay to national touring artist. The band emphasizes piano, vocals and some swingin’ horns. Davina & The Vagabonds are part jazzy swing, part...

Maha offers festival preview with local band showcases

* Maha Music Festival has unleashed its local band showcase line-up and it should be a great preview of what’s in store for Saturday, August 13. The showcases are curated by three of the local bands that will be playing Maha's local stage. Those three bands were chosen by HearNebraska.org and the festival. The first showcase, hosted by Noah's Ark Was a Spaceship, is Wednesday, June 22,...

Somasphere added to Maha’s local stage

Somasphere is the latest addition to the Maha Music Festival's line-up. The Lincoln-based electronica band presents its dance-flavored sound with the muscle of a live rock band. The band has cemented its regional appeal with appearances in Colorado, Nebraska and at the Wakarusa Festival in Kansas. Maha has yet to announce a final main stage act. There's also the Omaha Entertainment & Arts Awards...
