Joe, Bnois, Carolyn & Hadden

Several Texas blues guitar stars are hitting the area this week, starting with Smokin’ Joe Kubek and Bnois King. They and their band are up at The 21st Saloon Thursday, March 20, 6-9 p.m. The two Dallas-based artists have been playing together since 1989. Their fall 2013 release Road Dog’s Life (Delta Groove) is a follow-up to their 2012 move to Delta Groove. With a back-catalog of over 15...

Backbeat at SXSW 2014

My seventh year of South By Southwest coverage is now an Austin-based memory for me, but thankfully I'm filled with a notebook of band reviews and stray observations to sift through.

Making sense of SXSW has long become a job for somebody else. Grasping at a big picture in between the long lines, the milling crowds of people and the constant low-level thump of hundreds of kick drums on repeat...

South By Southwest 2014: Lost in an Orgy of Music

How does one summarize a week’s worth of music, madness, noise, fans, bands, booze, beers, streets of drunks and drugged and demented youth (and not-so-youthful) lost in an orgy of ideas and commerce and commercialism centered ‘round hopes and dreams made by guitars, bass, drums and vocals (and sometimes keyboards) struggling to get noticed at the largest rock ’n’ roll festival on the planet?

SXSW Day 4: Cate Le Bon, EMA, Angel Olsen, Urge Overkill, Eros & The Eschaton and Mark Kozelek…

If you attend South By Southwest for more than a few days, you’re bound to see the same acts more than once whether you want to or not. Yesterday being my fourth day, it was inevitable I’d collect a couple “doubles.”

Typical sets at SXSW are only about a half-hour — long enough to get a good sense of the band’s music and style, but short enough to limit the suffering if it sucks. SXSW...

SXSW Day 3: Eagulls, Future Islands, Jeremy Messersmith, Total Bathing Culture, Classixx…

Like I said, it was business as usual last night along 6th Street. Bands made tacit comments about the previous night’s carnage (where two people were killed and 27 injured when a car drove into a crowd on Red River St.) and there seemed to be a more-intense-than-usual police presence in the streets. Everywhere you looked cops stood in pairs with arms crossed at the ready. And it seemed like...

Car hits pedestrians at SXSW

Last night's South By Southwest festivities obviously were overshadowed by what sounds like a fairly terrible scene outside two of SXSW's most popular venues on Red River Street. For those who didn't read yet, a driver eluding a police stop crashed into pedestrians waiting on a barricaded street to enter the Mohawk. The website has more details on that. I was in the area...
