Reiver football grows across the river

Here’s something to keep your eye on for 2011 — Iowa Western football. It took Coach Scott Strohmeier all of two years to turn the school into a player in the junior college ranks. In 2008 the Council Bluffs community college didn’t even have football. In 2010 the Reivers finished their second season 9-2 and one game away from playing for a national title. Last week six IWCC players signed to continue their careers at Division I schools. They aren’t just going anywhere, either. Quarterback Zack Stoudt could be an SEC starter after signing with Ole Miss; and defensive tackle Jared Ebert will try to crack the line-up at Oregon. It will be interesting to see how closely Nebraska aligns…

Cosmic Forecast for Dec. 16-22

This be the last week of Sagittarius the Archer, and the end of Fall for us all. Sagittarius is the ninth sign, ruling travel, philosophy, gambling, the wild life, generosity, feasting, fun, luck, the joys of running and athletics, the thighs, higher education, publishing, the musical key of A flat and compositions. Before Sagittarius is over I’d like to invite you to check out some of my Astromusical compositions this Saturday (Inshallah), from my soon-to-be-released CD (one sign at a time), The ZODIAC, via my website. I hope to play a few tunes from it at the Jazzwholes reunion at Slowdown this Saturday, Dec. 18. We’ll see, hopefully? Remember Mercury is retrograde until Dec. 30, and will conjunct the Full…

Holiday Healing:

Procrastinators, take heart! If you’ve waited until the last minute to fill Christmas stockings or pump up the pile under the tree, here are some easy things to choose just in time for the holiday. Any one of them will bring a smile and have the added benefit of enriching the life of the recipient. Some of these suggestions involve a gift certificate so you can purchase them quickly, easily and at the last minute if you wish. The emphasis is on offering something for the mind, body and spirit. Rubber neck: Give her (or him) a gift certificate for a therapeutic massage. The next best thing to doing it yourself is having a pro do it for you. And…

From the Dust Bowl to the Rust Belt

I’ll be in the minority here, but I’m going to miss the Big 12. That wasn’t the fashionable side of the argument over the summer and it’s definitely not now. For most people the shadier aspects of this season — Eric Martin’s suspension, the penalty clubbing the Huskers took at A&M, the trophy snub from the league offices — only reinforced the sagacity of the move. And I agree. Going to the Big 10 is a great move for the University of Nebraska as a whole. But away from the football field it’s going to sting more than most people think. Nebraska was and always will be more Dust Bowl than Rust Belt, more Great Plains than Great Lakes. That…

Bowled Over

**Imgs in folder if useable A minute and a half into the second quarter of the Big 12 championship game, Nebraska safety Courtney Osborne intercepted a Landry Jones pass and returned the ball to the Oklahoma 12-yard line. As Osborne went down, the Sooners’ Ryan Broyles stripped the ball. Oklahoma’s offense returned to the field, and even snapped the ball. But before the snap, Nebraska had taken a 30-second timeout, during which coach Bo Pelini decided to challenge the call. The ruling of an Osborne fumble and Broyles’ recovery was overturned. Two plays and a Sooner penalty later, the Huskers’ Rex Burkhead passed to Kyler Reed for 5 yards and a touchdown. With 12:14 remaining in the half, Nebraska led…

Cosmic Forecast for Dec. 9-15

Here comes/goes Mercury retrograde until Dec. 30. Simply put, anything started after Dec. 30 has a better chance of succeeding than anything initiated before. Communication is a key to joint human endeavors and during such times as these clear, succinct communication often appears questionable or lacking. Vacation until 2011 to better enjoy your upcoming New Year. Tell them it’s your Astrologer’s advice. There are no mistakes. Peace & Love Shall Conquer All. — MOJOPOPlanetPower.com SAGITTARIUS (11.23-12.21) Hold yer horses, Pardner. You’ve got a month and a half until you (should) make your move. Storm Chasers see record sales

* Despite all the Twitter vitriol the name change from Royals to Storm Chasers appears to be working. The team announced a 475 percent increase in merchandise sales for November. Good enough to place Omaha in the top five in merchandise sales among all Minor League Baseball teams for the month. Not bad considering the team announced the change Nov. 15. If you want some of that new Chasers gear, the last Holiday Sale at Rosenblatt Stadium — and likely your last chance to get into the stadium — runs Dec. 10-13. On your way, pick up a new, unwrapped toy to donate to the Open Door Mission’s Project Santa and you can score a free Rosenblatt poster. * It’s…
