Dem Bones

Osteoporosis and the milky myth “got milk?” is the ubiquitous catchphrase of the ad campaign launched in 1993 by madmen at Goodby Silverstein & Partners agency in California. It’s doubtful even their most optimistic projection anticipated it would take on a life of its own and become a social phenomenon. The ads’ white-mustachioed figureheads number in the hundreds and include politicians, actors, athletes and other notables. The underlying endorsement is that cow milk “does a body good.” However, science and critics don’t agree. Many say milk does more harm than good. The dairy industry, like other agribusiness giants, is subsidized by federal tax dollars. Pricing has been controlled since the 1930s. Cow milk is virtually force-fed to school kids (by…

For The Record

Roy Helu, Jr. comes up big against Missouri Nebraska took a timeout with 2:17 remaining and the outcome decided. The timeout allowed Cornhusker running back Roy Helu, Jr. to catch his breath before carrying one more time, on fourth-down-and-1 at the Missouri 31-yard line. He gained 3 yards then ran to the sideline as fans chanted his name. Helu was oblivious to the chants. “I wish I’d heard it, though; that would’ve been cool,” he told reporters following the 31-17 victory against the No. 7-ranked Tigers. Near the end of his post-game interview, Helu asked a question of reporters: “So when they chanted the ‘Roy’ thing, how do you chant ‘Roy,’ because my name’s only three letters?” The chants were…

Huskers Win, Mavs Lose

The saying goes that you rarely get second chances in life. You almost never get them in college football. That’s the beauty of it. One loss and you’re generally relegated to an also-ran. But the Nebraska Cornhuskers got another valuable chance at conference redemption when Missouri beat Oklahoma last Saturday. We knew all along that this was likely a Big 12 North title game, but now it’s more than that. The Tigers are the team with a top 10 ranking and, by record if not point-spread, the front-runner in the division. They’re also the team with their national reputation still intact. If we feel the need to cleverly market this thing, maybe we can call it a re-REDemption. Nebraska gets…

Planet Power Oct. 28-Nov.2 Vol 36

Happy Halloween! I’ve always called Halloween New Year’s. I guess I’m just hooked to an Ancient Religion. The real festival is called “Samhain,” or the “Peace of God,” translated by the Christians as “All Saint’s Eve.” All agree the holiday thins the veil between this world and the next. Scared yet? Happy Birthday to and from Scorpius Incarnus! Infinity squared! “Will you still need me? Will you still feed me?” I’m taking pre-orders for my ZODIAC CD at $13 a pop. I love you all! — MOJOPOPlanetPower.com SCORPIO (10.23-11.22) Martians: Freedom is the key. You must feel free to be real. Your ruler Mars will transit Sagittarius these next five weeks as a preliminary for Mars-exalted transit into Capricorn…

Big Red Redemption

Huskers battle back against Oklahoma The stands are close to the sideline at Oklahoma State’s Boone Pickens Stadium. So there was no ignoring the remarks of fans, whose purpose definitely was not to encourage visiting players. Niles Paul took the abuse in stride. He told them: “God bless.” “It just fuels me,” the Nebraska wide receiver says. If so, Oklahoma State fans might have contributed to their team’s 51-41 loss against Nebraska. Paul, fueled by whatever was said, did his part, returning a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown and catching nine passes for 131 yards. Six of the receptions picked up first downs. “I always have a lot of confidence in Niles. He’s a great player and a…

Always White and Blue

New club brings European-style support to Creighton soccer For Matt Roberts it was Munich. An American in Bavaria, Roberts found the sport of soccer in the stands of German football superpower Bayern Munich. He fell in love with the way people supported the game, as well as the sport itself. The chants and songs, the flags and scarves, the expertise needed to appreciate good passing and tackling as much as scoring. He learned those things in the Bundesliga then brought it to Omaha and the Creighton University soccer program. Last spring, the Creighton Kommandos Supporters Club was born. Am Anfang (In the Beginning) For others it was Amsterdam or Kaiserslautern or Blackburn. The common characteristic among most of the 20…

Be Careful What You Wish For

Marijuana should not be ‘legalized’ Ah, how the times have changed — in most states at least. Yes, possession of an ounce of marijuana in the Sunshine State of Florida can still get you a felony arrest and five years in prison. Simple possession of little more than an ounce in Missouri and you’re looking at seven years in the slammer. You can join Cool Hand Luke for five years on the chain gang for an ounce of dope for personal use in the Bayou State. Though Nebraska was a leading state in reducing punishment for marijuana possession by decriminalizing it in 1979, our state leads the nation in the rate of arrests for marijuana. Yet by and large, pot…
