I wholeheartedly approve of Gregory Echenique’s look. The new Creighton big man sports goggles and the number 00 — the same number Jays alum Benoit Benjamin wore for most of his 15-year NBA career. It’s redolent of late ’80s/early ’90s NBA post players and I can’t decide if he reminds more of Benjamin, Kevin Duckworth, Moses Malone or Antoine Carr (another MVC alum). Those were all big and occasionally begoggled bruisers and that’s what I see when I look at Echenique. If his play reminds Jays fans of any of those guys, Creighton could be in good shape. Reiver football grows across the river
Here’s something to keep your eye on for 2011 — Iowa Western football. It took Coach Scott Strohmeier all of two years to turn the school into a player in the junior college ranks. In 2008 the Council Bluffs community college didn’t even have football. In 2010 the Reivers finished their second season 9-2 and one game away from playing for a national title. Last week six IWCC players signed to continue their careers at Division I schools. They aren’t just going anywhere, either. Quarterback Zack Stoudt could be an SEC starter after signing with Ole Miss; and defensive tackle Jared Ebert will try to crack the line-up at Oregon. From the Dust Bowl to the Rust Belt
I’ll be in the minority here, but I’m going to miss the Big 12. That wasn’t the fashionable side of the argument over the summer and it’s definitely not now. For most people the shadier aspects of this season — Eric Martin’s suspension, the penalty clubbing the Huskers took at A&M, the trophy snub from the league offices — only reinforced the sagacity of the move. And I agree. Going to the Big 10 is a great move for the University of Nebraska as a whole. But away from the football field it’s going to sting more than most people think. Nebraska was and always will be more Dust Bowl than Rust Belt, more Great Plains than Great Lakes. That…

Storm Chasers see record sales
* Despite all the Twitter vitriol the name change from Royals to Storm Chasers appears to be working. The team announced a 475 percent increase in merchandise sales for November. Good enough to place Omaha in the top five in merchandise sales among all Minor League Baseball teams for the month. Not bad considering the team announced the change Nov. 15. Bye Bye Big 12
It had to end this way didn’t it? The last stop on the Huskers farewell tour of the Big 12 — a trip that’s gotten uglier and more contentious with each passing week — is Arlington, Texas where they’ll face old Big 8 foe Oklahoma with a conference title on the line. No one in Nebraska would have asked for any other ending. Injuries, rumors, conspiracy theories, apologies, emails and PR black eyes haven’t made for a fun few weeks for Nebraska fans, but a little nostalgia seems like just the remedy.
