Mortal Combat: If You Eat Food, Read This

You’re being held hostage and likely don’t know it. Two entities are locked in mortal combat with everyone on the planet caught in the middle. On one side is the overwhelming power and bloated might of Corporate Greed. On the other side are those who could literally be known as Food Freedom Fighters. The battlefield is your kitchen table or, more accurately, your body. Thomas Jefferson once said: “If people let government decide what foods they eat and what medicines they take, their bodies will soon be in as sorry a state as are the souls of those who live under tyranny.” What you put in your body, what you nourish yourself with, is being increasingly scrutinized and regulated by…

Bee Healed: A Tip for Allergy Season

It’s time to think about it. Spring blossoms will be here sooner than we realize. Although the first pollens are weeks away, now might be a good time to prepare the immune system for the springtime onslaught collectively called “hay fever.” Honey of a deal. People have been using honey medicinally for thousands of years. Vials of honey found in the pyramids were perfectly edible when found five thousand years later. Pure honey does not spoil. It may naturally crystallize but gentle, low heat will bring it back to its liquid state. Many people find that using honey in the springtime is a natural way to avoid allergies. Understandably, since Big Pharma could never patent honey and make billions, little…

Cosmic Forecast for Feb. 10-16

Meow! Greetings our first week into the Year of the Cat! Some speak Year of the Hare; but I just don’t care. They need to rid themselves of the habit of calling the Year of the Cat the Year of the Rabbit. The Cat’s where it’s at. Audibly celebrate with Al Stewart’s only hit! Visually, here's Omaha artist Jim Jacobi's “Young Jaguar in Love” for you, from Kat Man Du. He was supposed to be “in” last week, but he said he had to hide to get satisfied with his pride before we/he could take a peek/peak. — AQUARIUS (1.21-2.19) Here's Mercury, Mars and Neptune in that order. Mercury is conjunct with the Sun right now, presenting…

Heart Health Month, Scurvy and Vitamin C

England once ruled the world. Really! Sailing the greatest naval force ever assembled at the time, our friends the Brits sent their armada far and wide, girdling the globe and extending their empire. On the open sea for months at a time, thousands of miles from land, those traveling tars existed on a steady diet of salt pork and biscuits, foods that kept for months in barrels and boxes — sort of like Slim Jims and Pop Tarts only healthier. But scurvy soon boarded ship. Scurvy has been described throughout history. Even the ancient Egyptians recorded the symptoms. Amazingly, however, its specific cause remained a mystery for centuries, though fresh foods were found to remedy it. Around 1800, Dr. James…

High on Grass: The Meat We Eat

“Little Boy Blue, come blow your horn. The sheep’s in the meadow, the cow’s in the corn.” Stop and think why Little Boy Blue was called to keep the cows out of the corn. Any farmer or rancher will tell you: If a cow eats its fill of corn, it dies. Because a cow, like all ruminant animals, was not designed by nature to eat corn — or any grain, for that matter. Corn will kill a cow as surely as Roundup kills plants. We’ve brought this topic to the table many times in the past and recently published research brings it to our attention again. Good for you. The 2011 British Journal of Nutrition, Volume 105, just published a…

Flu Season: It Doesn’t Add Up — and other news

It’s a topic visited here many times. But a recent article in The Atlantic, titled “Lies, Damned Lies, and Medical Science: MUCH OF WHAT MEDICAL RESEARCHERS CONCLUDE IN THEIR STUDIES IS MISLEADING, EXAGGERATED, OR FLAT-OUT WRONG,” has led us down this path once more. I’ve just spent hours scanning the web for a shred of … truth? We’re in the midst of what the techno-pharmaceutical-industrial complex calls “flu season” and I’m trying to get to the bottom of things. I’m insulted by the constant number-waving in mainstream media that claims 36,000 people die from influenza each year in the United States. We already know that the Centers for Disease Control’s own statistics confirm that the figure is inflated by a…

Eating Healthfully is not Food Elitism

A recent article in Newsweek drew attention to the Great Food Divide in America. I emphasize “America” because our concerns about food are relatively different from the concerns of the other seven billion eaters on the planet. Americans worry more about what we’re eating. Much of the rest of the world worries about if they’re eating. That’s not to say that all Americans are well fed. We must continue to solve the issues of hunger and food insecurity. However, much of the solution is not about provision or even poverty. It’s not that the planet cannot produce enough food for our population. It can. In fact, the planet already produces more than twice the amount needed. Distribution is the real…
