Speed! Nebraska sets date for soapbox derby, concert
* Road rash and rock 'n' roll reunite Saturday, July 21st at Soapbox Riot 400, the fourth annual adult soapbox derby and post-race rock show put on by Speed! Nebraska. The record label hosts both the 12 p.m. race at Seymour Smith Park, 68th and Washington and the 9 p.m. rock show at O'Leaver's Pub, 1322 South Saddle Creek Road. The $5 concert features the Filter Kings, Domestica, the Wagon Blasters, the Really Rottens, Qing Jao and Son's of Soapbox, raceway injuries permitting. * Red Sky Music Festival has abandoned programming Thursday, July 19th, which was supposed to be the second day of the four-day long festival held at TD Ameritrade Park, 1200 Mike Fahey Street, after failing to secure a headliner for that day's performance schedule. Event organizers did release details of Stage B performers, which include Logan Mize, The Farm, Kristen Kelly, Rock Paper Dynamite and more. The event kicks off Wednesday, July 18th with headliners Rascal Flatts. The other headliners are Brad Paisley and Def Leppard.
* Tilly & the Wall have put up "Love Riot", the first song to surface from their upcoming album, on their official band website. The album, Heavy Moods, comes out October 2nd via Team Love and was produced by Mike Mogis late last year. The album is the band's first in four years, following the release of O. Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Nick Zinner and the Faint's Clark Baechle guest on the album. The band has also filmed a music video for "Defenders", which will be released in the next few weeks. * Blu Simon will return to Omaha Friday, July 13th for a show at Gator O'Malley's, 12143 West Center Road. The local band has spent the last year becoming road warriors, taking its classic rock-rooted alternative pop from town to town. The band members, who all quit their jobs, now regularly gig in cities and small towns regionally and have formed a business to advise other bands on their methods to success.
* Expect plenty of local tunes during the second annual Plattsmouth Summer Festival Sunday, August 12th. The daylong show takes place on the corner of Main and Fourth streets in Plattsmouth and features performances by seven acts including Galvanized Tron, American Gunfight and the Sum of All Evil. The show is free and open to all ages.
