Robert Miller - Two Exhibitions
Omaha sculptor Robert Miller is having two exhibitions. “STATIONS”, Coal Mine Tipple Drawings and Sculptures now on view at the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts in Nebraska City runs through Thursday, February 28. The reception for the exhibition is Thursday, February 7 from 5-7 pm. Inspired by Bernd and Hilla Becher’s photographs of earlier 20th century Appalachian Mountain coal mine tipples, Miller has created a series of mixed media drawings and sculptures that capture the haphazard nature of construction and decay in an object over time. The Sunderland Gallery at St. Cecilia’s Cathedral will be having an opening reception for Arranged Music Series Sunday, Feb. 10, 1-3 pm. This series of work ‘found’ Miller when he discovered some discarded organ pipes. “I thought ‘how unique are these.’ By cutting and putting them back together I came up with the arranged abstract shapes. They twist, turn, and weave a primitive image that captures a sense of arranged music,” he wrote in his Artist Statement. Each of these exhibitions speak to an aspect of Miller’s aesthetic inquiry; one fluid and full of motion, the other objectively exploring vertical structure. Originally from Elkhart, Indiana, Miller holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the California College of Arts & Crafts in Oakland, California. He has exhibited his work throughout the United States since the 1970’s.
