Printmakers…Bemis Carver Bank…Bay
The Hot Shops Art Center is featuring “Pulled From the Matrix”, prints and the matrix from which they’re made, through November 23. Printmaker Amy Haney originated the idea. Lori Elliot-Bartle, Julie Sopscak, and Judy Haney assisted in the process of curating, promotion, and installation. The 23 printmakers featured at the Hot Shops Gallery used a variety of matrices including traditional wood block, doilies dipped in clay, computer generated objects printed with a 3-D printer and more. Haney’s inclusion of a glossary of terms of tools and processes adds to the magic. The Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, and The Rebuild Foundation, along with Theaster Gates invite applications for their joint Artist-in-Residence Program beginning January 2013. The residency will culminate with a public exhibition at the Carver Bank in 2014. The Carver Bank Artists-in-Residence Program provides a dedicated artist work studio and a $500 monthly stipend ($6,000 throughout the year) to exceptional North Omaha-minded artists or collaboratives. The emphasis is on artists of color, North Omaha residents, and those whose work critically engages issues of race and ethnicity. There will be three artists or collaboratives selected for the 12-month program. The artists can be at any stage in their careers and work in all disciplines, including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, film, video, new media, installation, performance, music, interdisciplinary, social practice, architecture, or hybrids of the above.
