Pick: Youth Lagoon

July 6
Youth Lagoon w/ Father John Misty
The Slowdown, 729 North 14th St.
9 p.m., $12 in advance/$14 day-of-show, onepercentproductions.com

What began as Trevor Powers' personal project during a Christmas break from being a student at Boise State University has led to Powers becoming one of the best new voices in indie pop. Powers sings and plays keyboard under the name Youth Lagoon and his first release, The Year of Hibernation, has vaulted him to a deal with indie powerhouse Fat Possum Records and tons of positive press online and in several music publications. The songs construct themselves on skeletal electronic beats, Powers' sweet, childlike, but eerily ethereal voice and lo-fi piano and keyboard melodies. The songs build into personal anthems added by guitar and building beats. "Cannons" stands out as Powers' first real highlight, as it builds from small and personal to open-armed and reassuring.
