Pick: Wayne Hancock

September 17
Wayne Hancock w/ Lloyd McCarter & the Honky-Tonk Revival
Bourbon Theatre, 1415 O St. in Lincoln
9 p.m., $12 in advance/$15 day-of-show, bourbontheatre.com

Wayne Hancock possesses the voice that you'd expect coming out of a classic country radio station on your AM radio dial. He calls his style "juke joint swing" and it embodies a whole range of roots, twang and quintessentially American song styles. There's rockabilly twang mixing with Western swing and honky-tonk country grit. Hancock is an Austin resident, who cut his teeth in that city's diverse and competitive music scene. This is anti-Nashville country music, drawing a line back to a more honest style of music played by the likes of Hank Williams and the early Sun Records' stable of artists. Since 2001, Hancock has been one of the staple artists of Bloodshot Records, as that label carries the banner for real-deal roots, blues and country music.
