Pick: VietNam

The resurrection of New York's VietNam is a welcome one, as the band's street poet psych-blues made a considerable impression on their 2007 self-titled debut. But as soon as that album seemed to spark up a following, the band flamed out. Singer Michael Gerner retreated to the West Coast, where he tinkered with soundscapes and vintage analog synths. Then somehow, Brooklyn beckoned him back. Gerner seems to bring a bit of that world into the new VietNam album, an A.merican D.ream. It's a slower-building take on his evocative tales of drugs, dead ends and broken hopes. This time there's an extra layer of ominous portent hanging over these stories, making the latest VietNam opus a perfect compliment to a late hour nightmare. This just may be the best show of the spring.
