Pick: The Black Keys

Aug. 1
The Black Keys w/ Tame Impala
Mid America Center, 1 Arena Way, Council Bluffs
7:30 p.m., $46.50, ticketmaster.com

The Black Keys fill arenas and amphitheaters these days and tour with an expanded line-up to play selections from their latest records, but the band still boils down to guitarist/singer Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney. Auerbach's blues rock songs now touch on elements of smooth Motown soul, powerhouse funk and meaty '70s classic rock. With the help of producer Danger Mouse, the band bridged the gap between R.L. Burnside and ZZ Top. The band's audience has exploded, thanks to the sucess of singles like "Tighten Up", "Howlin' For You" and "Lonely Boy". When a band retains this much of their kick-ass identity even as they start packing arenas, there's no reason to bemoan that fact that every cool kid's favorite garage blues duo grew up into a rump-shaking blues-rock behemoth.
